Gyokeres worry, £30m option - Man Utd summer transfers decided (2025)

Manchester United are looking at both ends of the pitch in the summer transfer window with a new striker and a new goalkeeper already being eyed-up by Ruben Amorim and key figures at Old Trafford.

Rasmus Hojlund, in his second season at United, has managed just eight goals in 43 appearances while Zirkzee has scored only seven since his transfer from Bologna. Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad, who has been injured since early February, have all outscored them.

Signing an elite centre-forward is increasingly likely to be Amorim's priority this summer, while the list of potential incomings linked with a move to Old Trafford is growing week-by-week.

The Manchester Evening News understands that, as well as a striker, United also intend to sign a goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window. Andre Onana has also made some high-profile mistakes this term - and Amorim is keen to bring in another shot-stopper to compete with him.

Victor Osimhen, Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap has all been linked with a move to United. It's also been reported that Benjamin Sesko is on the list of potential signings. RB Leipzig are demanding around £86million for the 21-year-old, who was - it has been claimed - watched by United last weekend against Wolfsburg.

Here, our writers take a look at the best and most realistic options to sign;

Amie Wilson

For me, Gyokeres seems like he would be a really good signing for any team, with Sporting reportedly reducing their asking price for him. His relationship with Amorim would be one advantage to United but, given how many clubs could be interested in the Sweden international, it could be a difficult deal to do.

Another striker who United ought to target is Delap. A £30million relegation clause in his contract with Ipswich means that he could be a bargain, given his impact in the Premier League in a struggling side this season.

As for goalkeepers, United could, potentially, look to EFL the Championship; Stoke City's Victor Johansson has impressed for the Potters this season, preventing the most goals in the division. He could be ready to make the step up the the Premier League and provide competition to Onana.

If United want someone who would be a guaranteed starter, then Leicester City's Mads Hermansen could be an option. The Foxes are expected to, however, ask for a big fee following confirmation of their relegation.

With uncertainty surrounding Onana's future, Burnley's James Trafford could be a great replacement in net. Having progressed through Manchester City's academy - and now shining on the Championship stage - Trafford has shown experience beyond his 22 years.

In 42 Championship appearances so far this season, he's kept 28 clean sheets - a remarkable 66 per cent clean sheet rate - and saved both penalties faced. It will be tough for United to lure the six-foot-six keeper away from Burnley with the Clarets closing in on promotion back to the Premier League, but it may be worth splashing some cash on the Englishman.

However, with United also looking at tightening up their finances, they may have to think smart in the striker's department. This is why it could, maybe, be good for Amorim to take a look at Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 28-year-old's contract runs out this summer meaning that the club could secure his services for free. Calvert-Lewin has experienced a rocky couple of seasons with the Toffees, but he has proven his goal-scoring threat before. During the 2020/2021 season, the striker scored 21 goals across thqt campaign so, if Amorim can recapture that level of performance, Calvert-Lewin could certainly be a threat up-front.

The update that United will target a new goalkeeper and centre-forward is not exactly surprising given the woes they have had at either end of the pitch this season. Their defence is relatively solid, while Amorim also has one or two top options in midfield, although another addition in the engine room wouldn't go amiss, either.

Strikers are likely to be hot-property this summer. Exactly where United fit in the race will depend on Champions League qualification - and the riches that come with it.

It's difficult to pinpoint exactly who United will target, due to lingering question marks over the budget, but there are plenty of would-be signings they should go after. For me, Osimhen ought to be top of the wish-list and he has everything needed to succeed in the Premier League - just ask Jose Mourinho.

The former United manager has been in the opposite corner to Osimhen in Italy and now Turkey. The Nigerian will be available, attainable and, unlikely other years, potentially affordable.

As for their new goalkeeper, United could do a whole lot worse than Aaron Ramsdale. In my book, he was unfairly treated by Arsenal - and if signed could compete with Onana for the gloves and No.1 shirt.

Josh Holland

The question up top really is quite simple, for me; Matheus Cunha and Osimhen. Cunha can fill the spot at centre-forward and behind the No.9, while Osimhen's goal-scoring record speaks for itself.

The Galatasaray striker has scored 95 goals in the past four seasons. He didn't get his move to the Premier League last summer, but will surely be on the move to England this year.

The problem with Delap, who has impressed me this season, is that he needs time to adapt. United can't afford to have many more players who are 'learning on the job'. Patrick Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro and Argentina star Garnacho are all young players who are still growing into their potential.

Osimhen and Cunha have been around and are improvements. For United to go to the next level, it's a no-brainer.
