Fallout 76 Foraging Guide: Fungi and Goo (2024)

The world of Fallout 76 is filled with a variety of items you can harvest and craft with. Many of these items can be classified as some sort of fungus or other interesting plant matter that’s not quite flower, fruit, or vegetable. Here’s how to get fungi and goo and what they’re used to make in Fallout 76.

Where to Find Fungi in Fallout 76

How to Find Blight

Blight is required to make the following:

  • Blight Soup
  • Disease Cure (Ash Heap)
  • Fermentable Blackwater Brew
  • Mirelurk Jerky
  • Sunshine Oil

When radiated in a blast zone, it mutates into Bright Blight, which gives you Raw Crimson Flux when picked.

Blight can be found around the Ash Heap region of Appalachia growing on trees, especially in the southern areas. Specific locations include:

  • Welch
  • East of AMS Testing Site
  • Hornwright Testing Site 3
  • West of Hornwright Air Purifier Site #03

How to Find Brain Fungus

This fungus is necessary to create:

  • Berry Mentats
  • Brain Bombs
  • Brain Fungus Soup
  • Fermentable Hoppy hunter IPA
  • Mentats

When Brain Fungus is out in the wilderness, instead of in a cave, it can become mutated due to blast zone radiation. This changes it to Enlightened Fungus and gives you Raw Crimson Flux when harvested.

It’s extremely common throughout Appalachia, especially in caves and mines. The largest source of Brain Fungus is in the Wendigo Cave, which can grant over 100 plus Brain Fungus if all are picked. Other high yield locations include:

  • Kerwood Mine
  • The tunnel between Big Bend Tunnel West and Big Bend Tunnel East
  • Carleton Mine
  • Glasses Cavern
  • Abandoned Waste Dump
  • Uncanny Caverns
  • Gauley Mine
  • Fort Defiance
  • Fort Atlas Substructure
  • Whitespring Service Entrance
  • Emmettt Mountain Disposal Site
  • Carson Family Bunker
  • The Deep

How to Find Digested Goo

Digested Goo is used to craft the following:

  • Disease Cure (Cranberry Bog)
  • Healing Salve (Cranberry Bog)
  • Psycho
  • Overdrive

Digested Goo is obtained by harvesting it from the Giant Pitcher Plant found in Cranberry Bog. It’s a volatile plant, like Thistle, and releases a radioactive gas a couple seconds after opening. You’ll need to harvest it before the gas releases, as that negates the goo. The gas inflicts 24 points of Radiation damage if you stand in it.

When hit by a blast zone, the plant turns into an Irradiated Pitcher Plant. Instead of Digested Goo you’ll get Raw Violet Flux from inside it.

The best way to find Giant Pitcher Plants is to explore around Cranberry Bog while keeping your eyes peeled for them. You want to look near the Sparse Sundew Grove, as they typically grow around it. Besides that, the following location has consistent spawns:

  • Glassed Cavern

How to Find Firecap

Firecap is used to make:

  • Disease Cure (The Forest)
  • Firecap Soup
  • Firecap Tasty Souffle
  • Glowing Fungus Puree
  • Mentats

Firecap is one of the hardest ingredients for me to find in Fallout 76. It’s used in a variety of recipes, especially The Forest variation of Disease Cure. When irradiated in a blast zone it turns into Blast Cap and gives you Raw Crimson Flux.

With a limited supply of the fungi, it can be frustrating to keep a supply of food and or Chems on hand. Here are all the locations it can be found in the wasteland:

  • Vault-Tec Agricultural Research Center
  • Overseer’s Camp
  • Grove’s Family Cabin near the tree blocking the road
  • Cow Spots Creamery
  • Arktos Pharma
  • Hanawha County Cemetary
  • North of the Isolated Cabin
  • East of Moonshiner’s Shack
  • West of Cobbleton Farm

To note, the Firecaps found in the Vault-Tec Agricultural Research Center aren’t effected by the Green Thumb Perk. You’ll only get one Firecap per plant when harvesting here.

How to Find Glowing Fungus

This item is used to create:

  • Bloatfly Loaf
  • Disease Cure (Cranberry Bog)
  • Disease Cure (The Mire)
  • Glowing Fungus Puree
  • Glowing Fungus Soup
  • Healing Salve (The Mire)
  • Fermentable Pickaxe Pilsner
  • RadAway
  • Water Filter

When found in a blast zone, it will have mutated to Glowing Mutshoot Fungus. Harvesting it gives you Raw Flourescent Flux.

Another extremely common harvestable in Fallout 76 is Glowing Fungus. Like Brain Fungus, it’s often found in caves and mines. Specific areas it can be found are:

  • Abandoned Waste Dump
  • Firebase Hancock
  • Flatwoods
  • Carson Family Bunker
  • Kanawha Nuka-Cola Plant basement
  • Burdette Manor
  • Watoga Bandstand

How to Find Glowing Resin

This ingredient is needed to create:

  • Chitlins Con Carne
  • Disease Cure (Savage Divide)
  • Fermentable Vodka
  • Healing Salve (Savage Divide)
  • Karma Syringe Barrel
  • Mountain Hocks
  • Syrup
  • Vodka

When irradiated, Glowing Resin mutates to Gloam Sap. When gathered, it will provide you with Raw Cobalt Flux.

Glowing Resin is found on the sides of trees, much like Blight. However, it’s flat on the surface instead of growing out like a shelf. You can find it at the following places:

  • Southeast of Marigold Pavillion
  • South of Emmett Mountain Disposal Site
  • North of Yellow Sandy’s Still
  • South of Vault 96
  • Northwest of North Cutthroat Camp
  • South of the Vantage
  • Northwest of Site Alpha
  • Monongah Overlook
  • South of Blackwater Mine
  • Ripper Alley
  • Whitespring Bunker
  • East of Pleasant Valley Station

How to Find Gut Shroom

Gut Shroom is used to craft:

  • Simple Gut Shroom Tea
  • Gut Shroom Soup
Fallout 76 Foraging Guide: Fungi and Goo (7)

Gut Shroom is only found in The Burrows, making it unaffected by blast zones. There are ten plants that can be harvested underground, regardless of which entrance you enter through.

How to Find Megasloth Mushroom

This cryptid ingredient is used to make:

  • Megasloth Mushroom Soup

As the name implies, these fungi are found growing out of a Megasloth, one of the Cryptids of Fallout 76. When slain, a Megasloth may drop one Megasloth Mushroom, unless it’s verdant season in which it may drop two. Since this item is from a creature, it doesn’t get affected by Green Thumb.

How to Find Strangler Pod

Strangler Pod is used to craft:

  • Disease Cure (The Mire)
  • Healing Salve (The Mire)
  • Steeped Strangler Pod Tea
  • Stimpak Super

Strangler Pods are part of the strangler plant that sometimes takes over the wildlife in the area. When soaked by a blast zone, they’ll turn into Glow Pods, which provide Raw Violet Flux when gathered.

Fallout 76 Foraging Guide: Fungi and Goo (9)

To find Strangler Pods you want to head to these places:

  • River next to Dyer Chemical
  • Ella Ames’ Bunker

Harvesting a Strangler Pod can depend on a couple things. If you’re in the middle of the quest An Organic Solution, they may not harvest. If someone else has recently doused the area in chemicals during An Organic Solution they may not spawn. If this is the case, server hop until you can collect unaffected Strangler Pods.

And that’s how you get fungi in Fallout 76. All of these can sometimes be found in the inventory of traveling merchants, but the best way to get them is to gather them yourself, especially if you have a disease to cure or are trying to complete a challenge.
