How to tell if a Maine Coon breeder is legit? ›

Any reputable breeder will have conversation so that you can get to know one another. If the price is 'too good to be true' then it most likely is a scam. Reputable breeders invest into quality food, veterinarian care, supplements, testing and are careful to invest in healthy pedigree cats for their breeding programs.

A Maine Coon that is in good health (and stays indoors) can typically live for 12 to 15 years. When we consider that the average lifespan of an indoor house cat is 10 to 15 years, it's a relief to see that Maine Coons are right on track!

As Maine Coons can be more prone to heart conditions than other breeds, so it's always best to have regular vet checkups to stay on top of any health issues. Maine Coons take a while to warm up to their new home, and can be skittish around new people.

Maine Coon growth stages

Once your feline is nine months old, their growth will slow down, but it won't stop. Maine Coons grow longer than other breeds and reach their full size when they're four or five years old.

Typical Maine Coon colours are brown tabby, black, white, blue, and cream. The two rarest Maine Coon colours are gold and silver. They're brought about by a rare inhibitor gene that causes the loss of pigmentation in the undercoat.

The cost of a Maine Coon kitten from a reputable breeder will be higher; the average price range of purchasing from a purebred Maine Coon breeder with a cattery could be anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000.

They are not shy or aggressive, and they do not need a lot of attention from you. It is easy to think that Maine Coons are high maintenance due to their size, but this is far from true. The Maine Coon cat breed has a reputation for being one of the easiest breeds ever.

Maine Coon cats can adapt to being left alone, especially when provided with proper care, environmental enrichment, and a well-prepared living space. While they thrive on social interaction and companionship, their intelligent and adaptable nature enables them to handle periods of solitude.

Thus, Maine Coons have a strong desire to be near their humans, making them undeniably affectionate companions.

Maine Coon's have large bodies and a sociable nature, which is why they are often referred to as “gentle giants”. They are considered one of the largest breeds of domestic cats alongside the Savannah, Siberian Forest, Norwegian Forest and Ragdoll cat breeds.

Are Maine Coons good house cats? Due to the Maine Coons fairly laid back personality, they can be kept as either indoor or outdoor cats. If you did not get your cat from a breeder, who usually has a pedigree, the only way to know for sure if your feline is a Maine Coon or a Maine Coon mix is to perform genetic testing.

The coat should be clean and soft, and when parted behind the ears and at the base of the tail, must be free from tiny black specks which indicate fleas. Check that the teeth and gums are healthy, and there should be no discharge from the nostrils.
