Game Recap: Baseball |
BALTIMORE -- The first 10 batters of the reached base in an 11-run seventh inning, as the UMBC Baseball team defeated America East rival UAlbany, 12-2, on Friday night at Alumni Field.
The Retrievers (12-14, 4-3 AE) sent 16 men to the plate in the inning, which was punctuated by a Matthew Best three-run homer that put the Dawgs up 12-1.
Luke Johnson was brilliant yet again in the victory, retiring 16 straight at one point, allowing just one run on four hits in 7.0 innings of work, while striking out nine and walking one.
How It Happened:
- UAlbany scored a run on a pair of hits in the first inning, the leadoff hitter in the second would walk, but Johnson would then retire 16 straight to keep it 1-0
- Derek Paris singled with one out in the fifth for UMBC's first hit, they would eventual load the bases on a pair of walks, but were unable to score.
- The Retrievers tied it up in the sixth when Anthony Swenda ripped a one out double and then scored when Luke Trythall followed with an RBI single
- A pair of one out singles put runners at the corners in the top of the seventh, but Johnson threw out a runner at the plate on a fielder's choice, and then stranded the bases loaded on a ground out to end his night
- UMBC then exploded in the bottom half of the inning
- It began when Dawson Baracani was hit-by-a-pitch to lead off the inning, followed by walks to Jayden Shertel and Best to load the bases
- Justin Taylor then smacked the first pitch off the wall in center for a two-run double to put the Dawgs up for good at 3-1
- Matt Ryan followed with a bloop double to make it 4-1, before Taylor scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1
- Swendamade it 6-1 with an RBI double, followed by a Trythall walk and an RBI double from Danny Wyatt that made it 7-1
- Paris walked to load the bases, and Baracani walked in a run in his second plate appearance of the inning to push the lead to 8-1
- A Shertel sacrifice fly made it 9-1, followed by Best's three run blast
- The Great Danes would get one run back on an unearned run in the top of the eighth, but that would complete the scoring for the game
- Taylor and Swenda each had a pair of hits, while Baracani went 1-for-1 with three walks, a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored
Game two of the series will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
